A momentary switch is the button that refuses to stay pressed. Hold it down and the circuit is made. Let go, and an internal spring pushes the contacts back to where they started. That single behaviour decides whether a machine keeps running after an operator releases the button, and choosing wrongly is one of the most common errors we see on control panels. This guide covers what a momentary switch is, how it differs from a latching switch, how the contact block changes what the circuit actually sees, and which pushbutton belongs on each function.

What Is a Momentary Switch?

A momentary switch only holds its state while it is being actuated. Release it and it returns to rest on its own.

Three parts do the work: the actuator the operator touches, the contacts that make or break the circuit, and the return spring that resets everything the instant pressure is removed. You use them daily without thinking. A lift call button, a doorbell, the start button on a wire bonder: press, release, done. The switch sends a command and then forgets about it. A latching switch does the opposite. It stays where you left it until someone changes it again, which is why it is also called a push-on, push-off switch.

Normally Open vs Normally Closed: The Contact Block Does the Real Work

Here is the part most guides skip. The actuator is what the operator sees. The contact block clipped in behind the panel is what the circuit actually reads, and it determines whether pressing the button makes or breaks the connection.

Why stop buttons use a normally closed contact block

This is a safety principle, not a convention. With an NC contact block, a severed wire, a loose terminal or a corroded contact produces exactly the same result as an operator pressing stop: the circuit opens and the machine halts. The fault condition and the commanded condition look identical, so the system fails safe. Wire a stop function normally open and a broken wire simply means the stop button quietly stops working, with nobody aware until it is needed. For stop circuits, look for positive opening action, the direct-drive mechanism specified under IEC 60947-5-1.

Stacking contact blocks behind one pushbutton

A single actuator can usually carry several contact blocks stacked together, so one press of one pushbutton can signal the PLC on a 24V DC input and switch a separate pilot circuit at the same time. Check the rating of each block against its actual load. A block rated for a logic input will not survive switching a contactor coil.

The rule worth memorising: use a momentary switch for a command, and a latching switch for a state. Momentary is the safer default because it always returns to a known position. Latching should be a deliberate engineering decision, never a convenience.

How to Spot a Momentary Switch on a Datasheet

Switch datasheets use a bracket convention that is easy to miss and expensive to get wrong. Parentheses indicate a momentary position.

  • Off-On is a latching switch
  • Off-(On) is a momentary switch
  • On-Off-(On) is latching on one side, momentary on the other

The same actuator family is often ordered as either variant, separated by a single character in the ordering code. Confirm the function code and the contact block configuration together. Discovering the mismatch at commissioning means a panel full of buttons that behave the wrong way.

Types of Momentary Switch You Will Actually Specify

Tactile switch

A tactile switch delivers a defined click the operator can feel through a glove. On a noisy floor, where the operator is watching the workpiece rather than the panel, that feedback is what prevents double-pressing. Specify a consistent actuation force across every button so operators build reliable muscle memory. Illuminated pushbutton and signal lamp

An integrated LED turns a pushbutton into a state indicator as well as a control. Where indication alone is needed, a separate signal lamp is cleaner than an illuminated button nobody is meant to press.

Key switch

A key switch is a latching switch with an access barrier. Legitimate uses include auto/manual mode selection, enabling a maintenance mode, or unlocking a recipe change. Ask what buyers usually forget: who holds the key, how many exist, and should they be keyed-alike or keyed-different? Decide at the order stage, not after installation.

Start and run functions use a momentary switch because the control logic holds the run state, not the button. Jog is momentary by definition: the operator must physically hold it while the axis moves.

Specifying Switches for Singapore Panels

Humidity here is the default operating condition, not an edge case. Condensation inside an enclosure and daily washdown in food and pharma plants both attack the actuator seal, so confirm the front-of-panel IP rating (IP65 or higher for anything exposed) and check the seal is rated against the actual cleaning agent, not just water. For fabs and cleanrooms in Tuas and Woodlands, outgassing and particle generation become real line items on the spec sheet. Machine builders exporting from Singapore should also expect to reference IEC 60947-5-1. FAQs About Momentary and Latching Switches

Is a momentary switch the same as a pushbutton?

No. Pushbutton describes the actuator style, momentary describes the behaviour. A pushbutton can be either momentary or latching.

Can a momentary switch be used as an emergency stop?

No. Emergency stops require a mechanically latched actuator with positive opening contacts, released only by a deliberate twist or pull.

Are all tactile switches momentary?

Almost always. A tactile switch is designed around a press and release cycle.

Can a latching switch be converted to momentary later?

Not usually. The mechanism sits inside the actuator, so the correct variant must be ordered from the start.
